Tree of Light Memorial Service - Sunday, 3rd December 2023

Remembering those we love

Mortons Tree of Light Memorial Service is an online service that celebrates and honours the lives of those we have loved and lost. Traditionally, on the first Sunday of December each year, we gather online in a shared act of remembrance.

What the Tree of Light means to us

Christmas is a difficult time of year for us and those that have experienced loss.  The Mortons Tree of Light Memorial Service is always an important date in our calendar and something we never miss.

The service offers great comfort and a dedicated opportunity to remember and pay respects to the loved ones we have lost. It is reassuring to know that we are not alone as there are hundreds of families watching at the same time.  This brings us all together, even though our journeys have been different, and we are ever thankful that the Mortons team are always there for us.

Making Christmas Special for Bereaved Families

We understand that Christmas can be a difficult time of year, when we often feel the loss of a loved one even more. Doing something special as a mark of remembrance can help families to cope and reflect. Here are some of our ideas:

Tree of Light Activity Sheet
  1. Choose a special decoration to place on the Christmas tree
  2. Light a memorial candle
  3. Write a memorial star for our Tree of Light
  4. Share memories over a Christmas meal
  5. Have a toast in their honour
  6. Watch their favourite Christmas film or listen to their favourite song
  7. Hang a stocking in memory and write a note or letter to put inside

As part of our Tree of Light event this year, we have created a children’s activity sheet that can be shared with the family. Completing the activities with children may help to introduce the Tree of Light and allow families to talk about its meaning and importance.

If you’re finding Christmas time emotionally challenging, know you are not alone. There is much support available and you can find more information on our website.

Frequently asked Questions

We've put together some answers to frequently asked questions to help get you the most from our Tree of Light Memorial Service.

  • Similar to previous years, there will be readings from the local clergy, music from the Salvation Army Band, readings by the Civil Celebrant, and contributions from the Mortons’ team.

  • We welcome you to write as many stars as you wish. We have a few ways you can do this.

  • Yes, we will. Our chosen charities this year will be Macmillan Nurses & The Salvation Army. We have provided links to our JustGiving donation page after you have submitted a memorial star, or you can donate directly by visiting our JustGiving page.

  • Since the service is accessible to all and available online, you will be able to watch it anytime from Sunday, 3rd December 2023. You will be able to watch it as many times as you wish, with family and friends, and will be able to send it to your loved ones.

  • Anytime between now and Christmas Eve you will be able to write and submit your memorial star and message online using our interactive star generator. You can also email us at stars@mortonsfunerals.co.uk. We will hand write your message and place it on our tree on your behalf. Please note that emojis will not be able to be included in your handwritten star.

  • We aim to review and post submitted stars within 1-2 working days.
