Tree of Light Rememberance Service - Sunday, 5th December 2021

Remembering those we love

Mortons Tree of Light Remembrance Service is a memorial ceremony to celebrate and honour the lives of those we have loved and lost.

Traditionally, on the first Sunday of December each year, we gather in a shared act of remembrance. Although we have seen an easing of restrictions in recent months, we understand attending in-person events may not be an option for some. That's why we’ve made arrangements to ensure that the 2021 Tree of Light Remembrance Service returns virtually, in a way that’s accessible to all.

Tree of Light with Twinkling Stars

0 stars submitted

A popular hallmark of Tree of Light is the writing of memorial stars for our giant Christmas tree at our Northfield premises.

At any time between now and Christmas Eve, you can submit your memorial message online using our interactive star, or you can email us at stars@mortonsfunerals.co.uk. We’ll handwrite your message and place it on our tree on your behalf.

What the Tree of Light means to us

Christmas is a difficult time of year for us and those that have experienced loss.  The Mortons Tree of Light Remembrance Service is always an important date in our calendar and something we never miss.

The service offers great comfort and a dedicated opportunity to remember and pay respects to the loved ones we have lost. It is reassuring to know that we are not alone as there are hundreds of families watching at the same time.  This brings us all together, even though our journeys have been different, and we are ever thankful that the Mortons team are always there for us.

Making Christmas Special for Bereaved Families

We understand that Christmas can be a difficult time of year, when we often feel the loss of a loved one even more. Doing something special as a mark of remembrance can help families to cope and reflect. Here are some of our ideas:

Tree of Light Activity Sheet
  1. Choose a special decoration to place on the Christmas tree
  2. Light a memorial candle
  3. Write a memorial star for our Tree of Light
  4. Share memories over a Christmas meal
  5. Have a toast in their honour
  6. Watch their favourite Christmas film or listen to their favourite song
  7. Hang a stocking in memory and write a note or letter to put inside

As part of our Tree of Light event this year, we have created a children’s activity sheet that can be shared with the family. Completing the activities with children may help to introduce the Tree of Light and allow families to talk about its meaning and importance.

If you’re finding Christmas time emotionally challenging, know you are not alone. There is much support available and you can find more information on our website.

Watch the Service

The 2021 Tree of Light Service will be available to watch on this page from Sunday, 5th December 2021 onwards.

Frequently asked Questions

We've put together some answers to frequently asked questions to help get you the most from our Tree of Light Remembrance Service.

  • Just like in other years, the service will feature local clergy, the Salvation Army Band, a Civil Celebrant and contributions from members of the Mortons’ team. We are unable to invite people to share in the actual service and respectfully ask that you do not attend our premises.

  • Yes, you can! A popular hallmark of the service, writing a memorial star for our Christmas tree, will still be available – albeit in a slightly different format this year. At any time between now and Christmas Eve, you can submit your memorial message online using our interactive star below or you can email us at stars@mortonsfunerals.co.uk. We’ll handwrite your message and place it on our tree on your behalf.

  • Yes. As a nation, the coronavirus pandemic has had a huge impact on our mental health. For those that have experienced a bereavement, isolation could not have come at a worse time – a time where many need to talk about their grief and be surrounded by family and friends.

This is why, for our 2021 Tree of Light Remembrance Service, we have chosen to support Mind, a charity dedicated to helping those experiencing mental health problems in the UK. Donate to Mind through our JustGiving page.

Mortons will also be making a donation to the Salvation Army, Droitwich Corps, as a small token of our gratitude for being part of our Tree of Light Remembrance Service.

  • The Tree of Light Remembrance Service will be available on this website page from Sunday 5th December 2021. You can watch the service at any time, and it will last for about an hour. Why not make a warm drink and get comfy in your favourite chair? – you could also light a candle in your own act of remembrance.

  • At any time between now and Christmas Eve, you can submit a memorial message online using our interactive star or you can email us at stars@mortonsfunerals.co.uk. We will handwrite your message and place it on our tree on your behalf.

  • We will aim to review and post submitted stars within 1-2 working days.
